Orchard School Students Imagine the World
December 2022's whole school "Beginning with Books" selection was MILO IMAGINES THE WORLD, written by Matt de la Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson. After hearing and discussing the story, every K-5 student received a small, white paper that had been pre-cut into the shape of a cloud, reminiscent of the cloud on the book's cover. Using colored pencils, like Christian Robinson, students drew a response to the prompt "What kind of world would you like to imagine?" The plan was to have the clouds assembled into a large collaborative mural to form the word "IMAGINE" that would be displayed somewhere in the school. This would serve as the share out for December.
The students could have illustrated a scene showing justice, peace and equity OR a fantasy completely made up. Some class discussions included how in your imagination you can change things that you may not be able to in real life and how you can't "judge a book by its cover." Below are some images taken in classrooms as students created their clouds.

About 350 clouds make up the completed mural that is now hanging in Orchard School's cafeteria.
